In 2024 we're saying goodbye to the feeling of dread when it comes to hosting the Christmas Day celebrations. It's just not in our ideal lifestyle to feel stressed so we’re here to help you swap chaos for calm. With a few of our tips, you’ll create the perfect celebration that you and your guests will remember long after the last bottle of champagne is finished.
Plan Ahead
It sounds basic but decent preparation is key to a stress free day, not just your menu but also your seating plan, decor, a schedule with time blocks and any other elements you are planning. Keep a checklist to track tasks like prepping the starters or setting up the drinks station. Don't try to make new or complicated dishes on the day, it's just not worth the drama and for extremely large Christmas gatherings, consider getting some dishes delivered from your local hotel or favourite restaurant.
Welcome with Warmth
Set the vibe that you want to continue with special touches as your guests arrive. A signature festive cocktail, like a Sugar Plum Fairy Martini (recipe at the end of the page) or a champagne tower is a great way to welcome people and get them talking. Or if you have a lot of younger guests, set up a hot chocolate bar with multiple toppings such as candy canes, marshmallows, mini gingerbreads and whipped cream. Choose slow burning or LED candles to keep the mood without constant refills, prepare a festive playlist, and diffuse your favourite fragrance like this one from Jo Malone.
Perfect the Table The Night Before
Give yourself one less thing to tick off on the day buy setting your table the night before especially if you are doing something detailed. We shared our favourite design trends for Christmas 2024 here but some other ideas can include layering plates with festive chargers, tie napkins with ribbons or use place cards for a personal touch. Add height with a statement centerpiece, seasonal flowers, greenery, or a mix of pillar candles on candelabra.
If You Can't Cook, Don't!
Don't ruin your Christmas if cooking isn't your thing, there are huge amounts of delivery options that offer restaurant quality food. If you are cooking, opt for simple but high quality ingredients to let the flavour shine. A perfectly roasted turkey with flavorful stuffing is a classic centerpiece or go for an alternative option with a herb crusted rack of lamb or whole roasted salmon. Sides can include truffle mashed potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, parmesan brussel sprouts or minted peas. Include a vegetarian option, like a lentil roast or stuffed squash, easily prepared the day before and perfect for last minute dietary requirements! Desserts can be a shared family style or individually portioned, both easy options to prep ahead of time.
Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
Don’t hesitate to ask for help! Assign someone to take coats or pour drinks, this eases your workload and allows others to contribute to the festive spirit. If you’re hosting for the first time, consider hiring a helper for serving and cleaning, so you can focus on enjoying the day.
End with a Thoughtful Gesture
Send guests home with a small token of appreciation, like a homemade treat, mini panettone, or a festive ornament. These thoughtful touches leave a lasting impression and wrap up the day on a high note.
With these tips, you’ll be the ultimate Christmas host—organized, relaxed, and ready to make your day special.
