The Book: The Odyssey
The film of the summer has been one of the most talked about before it even hit the screens. From the downright ridiculous (Lupita Nyong’o is a great casting choice, we’re not here to listen otherwise) to the critique of the American accents, Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation has been discussed. But before you head to the cinema, take a minute to appreciate the original story. Or at least a version of the translation of the original story. We went with the T.E. Shaw version which is a little dense in places but reads genuine, although if you want a more modern read with less old fashioned fluff opt for the Emily Wilson translation. Either way, it’s a worthwhile read before you see the film and we’re not going to lie, it feels nice to read something that is considered a classic.
The Candle: Aery
You already know we are big on the non toxic candles and Aery is always on rotation. It fills the room with fragrance and it’s good to know we’re breathing a clean one. We swapped out to a candle warmer instead of lit candles some time ago and not only is it even better on that non toxic air but it also makes candles last wayyyyy longer. It’s one of our best secrets that we tell everyone about. We’re currently on The Black Oak scent, a delicious blend of cedarwood, cardamom, nutmeg and oakwood that’s giving forest vibes.
Skincare: NIOD Fractionated Eye Contour Concentrate
NIOD is the lesser known big sister to The Ordinary. She’s a little more expensive, a little more luxury and has a little more research backing. This eye serum is a regular in our line up. It’s concentrated with 52% active complexes, to soften fine lines under the eye, deep expression lines (AKA crows’ feet) and provides firming and lifting. Now we’re big believers in spending our money on in clinic treatments rather than over priced skincare but at $70 a bottle and a high 4.4 stars with over 600 reviews, this is an easy add to cart.
The Coffee: a pre-loaded pour-over
We’re all about doing things for future us and a pre-loaded pour over is one of the best ways to start the day. There’s no nicer feeling in the morning than coming back from the gym, switching the machine on and coming out to freshly brewed coffee after a shower. Mornings, made easier. We’re on a mission to reduce plastic in our life (microplastics in our blood are legit terrifying) so we just upgraded to this black steel queen.
Skincare Extra: The Red Light Mask
Is an LED mask Basic B now? Maybe. Do we care? Not if we age like Peter Pan. We’re picky with our mask, as we are with everything, and this CurrentBody one has got rave reviews. Of course we went for the chest and neck kit and we might sneak other body parts under it too, because who doesn’t want a younger looking bum?
For the Cupboard: Poon’s Sauces Premium First Extract Soy Sauce
If you don’t love sauce then we don’t think we can be friends. We’re BIG on condiments over here, the more bougie the better and Michelin-starred soy sauce, well that doesn’t get any better. Ok ok its not quite Michelin-starred soy sauce but it is made by Amy Poon, who does come from Michelin-starred cooking lineage, which is close enough for us. Her award-winning soy sauce uses a traditional recipe from southern Taiwan, and is pressed only once rather than multiple times like most commercial brands essentially making it the cold-pressed-olive-oil equivalent of soy sauce.
Wellness: Hatch Restore 3
For anyone wanting to leave their phone outside of their bedroom but who still needs to make it to work on time, the Hatch alarm clock is an immediate add to cart. Before you ask, no it’s not just an expensive alarm clock, it’s a full sleep upgrade. Start the night before with dimming sunset lights and a guided audio wind down. During sleep it has a customisable night light and plays science-backed soundscapes like rain, ocean waves, brown noise, or singing bowls to mask outside disruptions. And in the morning, before the alarm goes off the clock slowly brightens to mimic a natural dawn and plays sounds like bird calls or wind chimes.
Wildcard: Pocket
We aren’t tech heads over here but there’s something about the new Pocket device that caught our attention. Maybe it was the fun ads with characters like Louis from Suits, maybe it was the sleek design or maybe it was the Sherlock Holmes investigative skills it possesses. The credit card sized device sticks to the back of your phone and records, transcribes, and turns conversations into to-do lists and yes it can listen to your call and transcribe everything the other person said. Perfect for when your boss denies saying something that you KNOW they said. At $129 with no subscription and unlimited use it’s a nice way to make life easier.
